Birth, death and marriage indexes in Australia are arranged according to state or territory. For details, jump down to the state or territory you are interested in.

Many of the CD-ROM and microfiche indexes are available at libraries in Australia. Check with your local library to see which indexes they hold. If they do not hold what you want, they may be willing to get them.

Indexes On CD-ROM

There are three DOS-based CDROMs released in the early 1990s.

  • Pioneer Index 1788-1888 NSW, contains birth, deaths, marriages
  • Federation Index 1889-1918 NSW, contains births, deaths, marriages
  • Between the Wars 1919-1945 NSW, contains deaths, marriages

The NSW Registry have a free online system to search their indexes:

This system searches:

  • births more than 100 years old
  • marriages more than 50 years old
  • deaths more than 30 years old

There are three sets of microfiched indexes available:

  • Pioneer Index 1788-1888 NSW, contains birth, deaths, marriages
  • Federation Index 1889-1918 NSW, contains births, deaths, marriages

Northern Territory

There is one CD-ROM with official birth, death and marriage indexes of the Northern Territory.

The Genealogical Society of the Northern Territory has published a CD-ROM with indexes to many death-related records.

Tasmania

Indexes on CD-ROM

There are two sets of BDM indexes available on CD-ROM for Tasmania.

  • Tasmanian Pioneer Index 1803-1899
    There have been two editions of this CD-ROM. The first was published more than 15 years ago by INFORMIT, and is designed for use with DOS.
    The second CD-ROM has the same title, but uses the newer Windows-based software DiggerTM.
  • Tasmanian Federation Index Births 1900-1919, Deaths and Marriages 1900-1930

Victoria

Indexes on CD-ROM

  • Pioneers Index Victoria 1836 to 1888 contains births, marriages, deaths
    There have been several editions of this title. Many (100,000's) of amendments were made between editions. The most recent edition is the only one published with the Windows-based DiggerTM software; earlier editions used DOS-based software.
  • Federation Index Victoria 1889 to 1901 contains births, marriages, deaths
  • Edwardian Index Victoria 1902 to 1913 contains births, marriages, deaths
  • Great War Index Victoria 1914 to 1920 contains births, marriages, deaths
    Out of print. The Registry has not announced any intention to produce more of this title.
  • Death Index Victoria 1921 to 1985 contains deaths
  • Marriage Index Victoria 1921 to 1942 contains marriages
  • Marine Index Victoria 1853 to 1920
    births deaths and marriages that occurred at sea, includes copies of the certificates so these do not have to be ordered separately.

Indexes Online

The Registry offers online searches of their indexes for a fee. As at July 2007 the fee is $0.99 for each page of up to 20 results. This system searches:

  • births 1853 to 1924
  • marriages 1853 to 1942
  • deaths 1853 to 1985
  • church baptisms, burials and marriages 1836 to 1853
  • births, deaths, marriages at sea 1853 to 1920

Western Australia

Indexes on CD-ROM

The only official CD-ROM of BDM indexes for Western Australia was published about 15 years ago on a DOS-based system. That CD-ROM is now out of print. It was called Western Australian Pioneer Index 1841 to 1905.
