Morwell National Park Bird list

A walk around the property (with steep sections) followed by a visit to nearby Morwell National Park. Bring food and drink for the day and a chair.

Take Princes Hwy through Morwell. Turn off to, and proceed through, Churchill. Approx 1km past Churchill, take left turn to Jumbuck and Jeeralang Junction. About 500m further turn left into Lindners Road, just after bus stop. Follow Lindners Road for approx 2km, to four-way junction where main road goes left. Go straight ahead into Morans Road, a No Through Road. Approximately 100m along on left is driveway and shed for "The Observatory". If go too far, use top of driveway approximately 200m further on left to do multi-point U-turn: road deteriorates after that. Allow 2 hours from Cheltenham. Melway map 90 J 3

Meet at the gate on the south side of Heatherton road, west of the bridge over the creek and west of the Monash Freeway. Note that if we can't get the key to the gate we will be parking on Heatherton Road. We will cover the southern wetlands before morning tea and the northern wetlands between morning tea and lunch. Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 July Ruff Property, Nagambie
10.00am
Melway Map 510 L 4
Bird list

We will be starting at 10 am on both days. If people wish to stay overnight on the Saturday, you can camp on the property or sleep on the floor of the shed or stay in a motel in Nagambie. Nominal charge of $5 per head if staying at the property. For those staying, there will be a spotlight Saturday evening, weather permitting. A portable toilet will be available.

Travel up Hume Hwy, taking Goulburn Valley Hwy exit just after the bridge over the Goulburn River (approx. 8 km past Seymour exit). Travel north approx 20 km along Goulburn Valley Hwy to Nagambie, turning left into the Heathcote-Nagambie Rd immediately behind the United Service Station. Travel approx. 16 km along Heathcote-Nagambie Rd to the Mt. Black Road turnoff on the right, about 300m past the signposted Murdoch Lane. Mt. Black Road is a dirt track and heads north into the forest. It is only signposted by a vertical inscription on a treated pine pole located next to the track entrance, so is easily missed. Travel up the Mt Black Road for approx 1.6 km, (ignoring the track that branches off to the left at the Mt. Black Flora Reserve sign) to the second gate on the right. It has Land For Wildlife and Trust for Nature signs on it, but when the gate is open, the signs are not so easy to see. This is the entrance to the property. The house is located a further 2 km down the driveway. Travel time from GPO Melbourne to property entrance approx. 2 hours. Enquiries: Tania on (03) 9282 5080 (BH) or (03) 9583 2175 (AH).
