Yet again, no news. Sigh.


England and Wales Death Indexes
===============================
The first two CDs in this series, covering 1984-1988 and 1989-1992, are
now available. Each CDROM includes between 2 and 3 million death index
records for England and Wales. These CDs are based on the data that
can be purchased directly from the ONS in England, but have
significant extra benefits. They include, and are searchable by,
county. Some errors in the original data have been corrected. They
include age at death, and date of birth (where recorded). They are
searchable using the popular Digger software. And to top it all off,
they cost a lot less than from the ONS!

There will be another two CDs with deaths, covering 1993-2000, in
another month or two. A few months after that the marriage indexes
for the same period will start to become available. The marriage
indexes will include not only the county, but the spouse's complete
name! 

At this stage we expect each CD in this series to be $90.


Surname Atlas
=============
Archer Software, of Genmap UK fame, have recently released a Surname
Atlas. This excellent program uses the data from the 1881 UK census,
plus a few other similar sources, to map surnames (or given names!)
throughout England, Wales and Scotland in the late 1800s. It is an
easy to use program, with many options available for you to get the
maps looking just the way you want them. It is great for determining
where your ancestors may have originated, and printing maps to show
relatives. People doing one-name studies, or any other surname-related
research, will find its mapping very useful. You can also use it to
find out all sorts of facts, such as how the popularity of a
particular given name changed with time. At only $38.50, it's a
great tool. 

If you'd prefer to map your own personal data, rather than investigate
surnames and given names, have a look at Genmap UK instead.


Marriage Index. Victoria 1921-1942
==================================
Still no release date available for this title. Apparently there are
rumours that the CD was released, then withdrawn. I can confidently
state that is incorrect. As of today, this CD-ROM has definitely not
gone into production. We are unsure of the reason for the delay, but
hope to have some more concrete news in two or three weeks. We will
send a newsletter once we do know anything concrete.
