The Master Genealogist
======================

The Master Genealogist version 5 has been completed and released by
Wholly Genes in the US. We are waiting on a shipment at the moment,
and barring any unexpected delays through Customs we should have
stocks in less than two weeks.

If you have purchased the interim version 5.09 from us, we will send
your free update to the completed version 5.11 complete with a Getting
Started manual as soon as we receive our stocks. If you haven't
received either your full copy or a notification of the reason for
delay by mid-March, please contact us.


Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist
==============================================

Over the Christmas break I was able to sit down and read 
the book "Getting the Most Out Of The Master Genealogist" edited by
well-known TMG advocate Lee Hoffman. I'm impressed!

The book is by TMG users, for TMG users. It is 320 pages long and
quite large in size, so there's a lot crammed into it.

Each chapter covers an area of The Master Genealogist and explains
effective ways to make use of that feature. There are chapters on
managing your information, charts and reports, importing and exporting
data for exchange with other researchers and research aids in TMG.
The book also covers creating charts with the TMG companion program,
Visual ChartForm (VCF).

I was particularly impressed by the chapter on scanning which had very
sensible and practical suggestions on how to choose a scanning resolution,
and for what purposes a given resolution is best suited.

Other highlights for me were the chapters on reporting and the suggestions
on managing sources. Census records, for example, can be tricky and
confusing and the book suggests a way to record them that hadn't occurred
to me before.

The sections on sentence structures were also very helpful. If you've
been struggling to get your reports reading just the way you want,
there's a good chance you'll get some great pointers from this book.

If you already have TMG and suspect there's capability in there that you
really aren't tapping into, this book is for you. It is well worth the $55.
