New TMG 5 Training Videos
Introduction
============
This newsletter is much larger than usual, because we have lots of
news. There are quite a few new CDROMs due out before Christmas, plus
we have news of upgrades to some software, a new product line we will
be stocking in the next week or two, and more!
The Master Genealogist version 5
================================
Firstly the latest news we have on the next version of TMG, version
5. Wholly Genes in the USA thought it would be available by now, but
they have run into some problems. A "pre-release" partial version is
available for purchase and download directly from their web site, but
this version is not fully functional (much of the reporting section is
missing) and probably still has bugs in other areas.
Once the problems have been ironed out, Wholly Genes will then start
producing CDROMs and manuals before releasing the "real" version 5. As
no one knows how long the problems will take to sort out, no one
really knows how long before version 5 is released. The absolute
minimum before it is available in Australia would be 6 weeks, however
I think 3 months is more realistic.
We have been told unofficially that anyone who has purchased version
4.0d in the last two or so months will be entitled to a free
upgrade. So if you fall into that category, keep your receipt safe!
LDS Companion Version 2
=======================
We have taken delivery of the new version of the popular LDS Companion
from Archer Software. This new version has many enhancements,
including:
* supports British Vital Records Index (BVRI) 2nd edition
* adds conversion support for Gedcom files from the various census
products (including US 1880 Census)
* adds support for more recent Vital Records Index CD's (Western
Europe, Mexico)
* Improved program interface with input and output file panes, input
file sensing etc.
* Higher-capacity and faster File Viewer, adding viewer for Rich Text
File format
You can purchase the new version from us for $38 plus postage. If you
own version 1 and wish to upgrade, contact Stephen Archer
(steve@archersoftware.co.uk) to organise a free upgrade by email.
New Digger CDROMs
=================
There are several new Digger CDROMs in preparation at the moment, all
expected before Christmas.
South Australian Marriage Registrations 1917-1937
This new title follows on from the SA Marriages 1942-1916 released last year.
The data is just as comprehensive and reliable as previous SA
titles. Congratulations to SAGHS for putting together yet another high
quality dataset. Price is yet to be announced, but is expected to be
similar to previous SA titles. Our current best estimate for release
is late September/early October this year.
NSW Bounty Immigrants 1828 to 1842
After doing a wonderful job indexing the Victorian Inquests, Marjorie
Knight moved on to the Bounty Immigrants records. She has chosen to
include all sorts of juicy details from the original records, so this
should be an excellent source when released later this year. Price is
yet to be determined.
Tasmania Colonial Collection
A variety of Tasmanian data will also be released late this
year. Included on this CDROM will be three separate databases,
including parish and convict records from Tasmania. More details will
be available closer to publication.
New Flikker CDROMs
==================
Over the coming months you may start hearing about our new computer
program "Flikker". Coherent Software have developed Flikker to promote
easy access to old books and documents that would be of great interest
to family history (and other!) researchers if more widely available.
Books and other documents are scanned into a computer using a high
quality scanning system. These scans are converted into a Flikker
book, and placed on CDROM. Those who have used the Marine Index will
have used a variation of Flikker to view the pictures of the original
certificates included on that Digger CDROM.
The following titles are currently being prepared. While pricing has
yet to be finalised, we expect prices to range from about $45 to $110,
depending on the size of the publication. Flikker will work on any MS
Windows system from 95 onwards.
Ireland: Index to Baronies, Parishes, Towns and Townlands 1851
This book is a standard reference for anyone trying to trace their
Irish ancestors. 993 pages. Expected early September 2002.
Australia: Gazetteer 1848
Have a placename in Australia from the 1800's and not know where it
is? Or wondered how major a town somewhere was during the 1840's? Then
this CD will be ideal. I enjoyed reading about Melbourne, including
the "10 Mahomedans and Pagans" living amongst the 2334 dwellings. 530
pages. Expected late September 2002.
England and Wales: Gazetteer 1841
If your mystery place is in England or Wales, then this is what you
need. Extensive coverage not only of places, but railways and other
constructs as well. 2683 pages. Expected fourth quarter 2002.
Ireland: History of County Clare
This book really is a gem if you have any ancestors in Clare in the
1700s or earlier. I was impressed at the detail, including names and
relationships of "normal" people. If your ancestors were there,
there's an excellent chance they are mentioned somewhere in here. 754
pages. Expected late 2002.
Scotland: Gazetteer 1846
Another gazetteer, so those with Scottish ancestry aren't left
out. Expected early 2003.
Victoria: Federation Referendum Voters 1899
Contains names and addresses of those who voted (males only!) in the 1899
Referendum on Federation. Expected early 2003.
Ancestry.com CDROMs
===================
Some of the ancestry.com CDROMs will be available through Coherent
Software in the next week or two. We will be stocking the English,
Scottish and Irish parish records. They will be $89.50 each. Check our
web site in about a week for more details.
Price Increases
===============
You may have already heard that the Registry of Births Deaths and
Marriages in Victoria increased the prices of all their products on
July 1 this year. That means all Digger CDROMs published by them have
increased in price by approximately 3%. Unfortunately they did not
give much notice of this price increase and, being end of financial
year, we had run our stocks right down. Consequently we did not have
stock at the old price and had to increase our prices at the same
time.
We do not understand why they did this, and hope that other publishers
do not follow suit. Please note that this price increase only affects
those titles published by the Victorian Registry: all other Digger
prices remain unchanged.
New TMG 5 Training Videos
=========================
Two new training videos for The Master Genealogist 5 are
available. The VHS PAL (Australian format) videos show you how to get
the most out of TMG. If you are using the pre-release version of TMG
5, or maybe want to see what version 5 is about before deciding to
upgrade, then one or both of these is just what you need. They are
$39.50 each, and more details are available from our web site
(www.cohsoft.com.au/gene/).
